A waitress has caused some heated debate online due to her unorthodox advice on how restaurant servers should deal with customers who do not leave a tip.

Kat Busch from Texas has worked in the service industry as a bottle girl for four years.

She has gone viral on TikTok after she said restaurant servers should directly confront stingy customers.

In her video, Kat said: “Zero-dollar tip? No problem.”

She tells the audience to walk up to the person that paid the bill and ask them about the tip “in front of everyone”.

Kat has a script she uses to politely ask the customer why they did not leave a tip.

She acted out the conversation and said: “Hi sir/ma’am, I see you didn’t leave a tip. Is there anything I could improve on with the service that you feel like you could share with me?”

Kat has said “nine times out of ten” the customer will make an excuse and say it was a mistake, but will ultimately leave a tip.

In the worst-case scenario, Kat said the customer will give you a “verbal tip” on how to improve your service in the future.

She said: “Short story is, confront them” but also added as a disclaimer this advice was for those who worked at a sitdown restaurant.

In Kat’s comment section, people were divided about her advice.

One person, who seemed to work at a restaurant, said: “I would get in SO much trouble if I did this. Some people just don’t tip no matter how good your service was.”

Another person chimed in, and asked: “What would you do if customers stop coming to the restaurant because of servers chasing them for tips?” to which Kat replied: “Why would the restaurant want people that don’t tip to come back continuously?”

However, a lot of people agreed with Kat, as one comment said: “Servers should be allowed to do this! I would of loved to embarrass a lot of people when I used to serve.”

Kat later posted in the comment section to follow her advice “at your own risk” and it’s worth it if the bill is low.

Recently, another user responded to Kat’s video and advised against restaurant workers from following the advice.

Jesse Rowland is a server who also posts tips to fellow industry workers on the best way to improve their service.

In his video, Jesse said to talk to a manager and let them deal with a customer who has not left a tip, and added that a direct confrontation by the server could get them fired.

In his comment section, the most popular comments agreed with Jesse, and one user said: “I had a server confront me about not tipping and it was so bizarre, tipping is an option, not a requirement.”

Another user disagreed and said “If you do not tip, do not expect good service, especially if you return”, to which Jesse replied and jokingly said: “If you are allowed to return.”

Kat replied to Jesse thanking him for his video, to which Jesse replied: “I only did it because I knew you could handle the heat. All love baby, servers represent!”
