Tennis icon Martina Navratilova has opened up on her “seven months of hell” before being declared cancer-free last month.
The nine-time Wimbledon singles champion was present at SW19 throughout the tournament and enjoyed Carlos Alcaraz’s final win from the Royal Box.
She spoke to Good Morning Britain on Monday to discuss her road to recovery after breast and throat cancer left her with “seven months of hell, emotionally and physically.”
She praised her wife Julia Lemigova who “was amazing,” Navratilova said. “Helping me throughout the treatment. Particularly in New York with the seven weeks of proton.
“So I was diagnosed early December and I finally got the all-clear three weeks ago. So it really has been seven months of hell, emotionally and physically.
“I lost about 25lbs so I’m very slender now. It’s been very difficult but I’m cancer free now knock on wood. And Julia – it scared her too. it was scary.
“The actual treatment was horrific. You know chemotherapy, radiation, it really beat me up. Physically it was brutal and it’s still hanging over your shoulder. No matter what you can’t get away from it. We were both really scared.”
