The 90s were certainly a terrific time.
It was a decade which saw a lot of change, from new technology to great movies and TV, as well as, of course, iconic fashion trends.
Everything about the 90s will leave you feeling nostalgic, whether you were a toddler, teenager or adult at the time. But one thing that might be triggering is just how cheap everything was.
Now with the cost of living crisis crippling the nation, seeing how much £1 can take you back in those days might just set you off. In an Instagram post, it showed all the items that you can nab for less than a quid.
User @my90sthings posted the clip with the caption: “What you could buy for £1 in 1994.” From cheap petrol to dozens of Premier League packets, just make sure you take a big deep breath before you scroll down…
It starts by showing two litres of petrol which cost a little 43.9p each, meanwhile, three cans of Coca Cola would set you back 32p in those days.
Chips and gravy, a British delicacy, was 82p back then, nowadays you’re looking at just under £10 (ouch). Meanwhile shooting your shot at luck with a National Lottery ticket was just a pound then, nowadays it’s doubled in price.
Chocolate fans look away now as in those days Freddo bars were 10p each, whereas today it’s about 49p. Something for the footie fans, in the 90s Premier League stickers were 25p each, meaning you can nab four for a pound.
The nostalgic clip also showed 99p cones, costing, well 99p. Two pints of milk were around 35p, while three tins of Baked Beans could have set you back 29p then.
On to Royal Mail stamps, if you were sending parcel via first class, it only cost 25p each. Now as of April 2, 2024, a first class stamp for a standard letter costs £1.35.
Since the video was shared earlier this month, it garnered a lot of attention from Brits who were simply not pleased. One said: “Prices today are criminal.” While another added: “We had it so good back in the 90s and we didn’t know it!”
A third commented: “I’d easily go back to the 90s and stay there forever! I don’t care about having this advanced technology. It was the best of times, everyone is woke these days.
“It’s not a nice world anymore. so I’d easily without question go back to the 90s.” Someone else chimed in: “These prices are what I expect still when walking into a shop. Only to be rudely awakened.”
