Removing stubborn oil marks from fabrics can pose a challenge as oil can notoriously permanently stain.
However, there is a simple hack using chalk that can be a lifesaver when used correctly.
This humble classroom staple, when applied correctly, has been found to absorb oil effectively, making it an ideal choice for tackling grease spots on driveways, garage floors, clothing, and more.
The process is simple: generously apply powdered chalk directly onto the oil stain, ensuring complete coverage.
Allow the chalk to sit for several hours or overnight, allowing it to absorb the oil.
Afterward, sweep or vacuum away the chalk residue, revealing a noticeably cleaner surface.
Enthusiasts of this unconventional cleaning method are singing its praises, citing its affordability and effectiveness.
Sharing step-by-step instructions, experts at Bosch said: “Apply crushed chalk – sprinkle on enough to completely cover the stain. Let the chalk sit – absorbing oil from your clothes.
“Reapply chalk whenever you see it’s clumped together – keep doing this until the clumping stops, which means there’s no more oil to absorb.”
Its absorbent properties make it particularly effective for lifting oil-based stains, leaving surfaces looking clean and refreshed.
Moreover, chalk’s versatility extends beyond just driveway stains. It can also be used to tackle oil spots on clothing, upholstery, and even kitchen countertops.
For tougher stains, experts suggest a second step on top of the chalk.
They added: “Once you’ve blotted your stain and been through the baking soda or chalk steps of your choice, apply a little liquid dish soap and rub it in gently as a pre-wash treatment.
“This is where you could also use your old, dry toothbrush to help loosen up any oil that remains.
“Let the dish soap sit for around five minutes before rinsing. Then throw your garment into the washing machine.”
