Novak Djokovic teared up on Serbian TV as he paid tribute to the victims of a school shooting in his home of Belgrade. The world No 1 sent a prayer to those affected as he wrote an emotional message on the camera following his win at the Rome Masters.
Djokovic got emotional following his victory in Rome on Friday night as he took the opportunity to pay tribute to those affected by the recent tragedy at the Vladislav Ribnikar primary school in his home of Belgrade. The top seed first wrote a heartfelt message on the camera lens before sending his prayers in a TV interview.
“Saint Basil of Ostrog, pray to God for us. Elementary school ‘Ribnikar’. My deepest condolences to everyone affected by the tragedy,” he wrote on the camera.
The Belgrade native then got emotional during an interview on SportKlub. Speaking on the court moments after his victory, Djokovic was in tears as he said: “Sincere condolences to the parents. As a father, I can only imagine how those people feel. I hope he gets through all of this.”
Djokovic had previously shared some tributes to his Instagram story in the wake of the shooting on Wednesday, May 3. A 13-year-old boy was arrested following the attack which killed a total of people – eight students and a security guard.
The world No 1 grew up in Belgrade and still has a home in the Serbian capital, also spending time in Marbella and Monte Carlo. He spoke after defeating Tomas Etcheverry 7-6(5) 6-2 in his first match in three weeks.
