Novak Djokovic was left “feeling bad” for interrupting John McEnroe’s analysis on Eurosport of the Serbian tennis star’s victory over Karen Khachanov in the French Open quarter-final. Djokovic remains on course to hold the men’s all-time record for Grand Slam titles after coming back from a set down to beat Khachanov.
The 36-year-old came into the French Open with a few question marks with disappointing results in the warm-up tournaments. But Djokovic has eased any concerns about his form in the early rounds of the French Open, having not dropped a single set prior to the quarter-final.
Khachanov then threatened a surprise result when he took a 1-0 lead over the Serbian tennis icon, but Djokovic was able to quickly get back in control. He ended up serving the contest out to love to clinch his spot in the French Open semi-finals.
McEnroe was impressed by what he saw from Djokovic, although he felt Khachanov ultimately ran out of steam. McEnroe: “It’s amazing to even say this but Khachanov had played a lot more.
“He had played a five-setter first round, two four setters, you lose sight of that. Djokovic…” But the American tennis hero had to be cut short on Eurosport as Djokovic was ready and waiting for his interview.
Eurosport host Barbara Schett said: “John I have to interrupt because we have a special guest. I’m sorry! We’ll get back to you in a little bit. I hate doing that…”
And Djokovic was equally apologetic at the start of his interview, admitting McEnroe’s post-match analysis is something he enjoys listening to. “First of all I feel bad for cutting John McEnroe in the middle of his assessment and analysis!” Djokovic started.
