Moana fans will soon be transported back to the fictional island of Motunui with the surprise announcement of the animated sequel.

Although the movie was originally expected to be released on Disney+ as a series, CEO Bob Iger confirmed the animated hit would premiere on the big screens as a feature film.

Its 2016 predecessor garnered millions of fans worldwide and scored an impressive 96 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes.

As Walt Disney Animation Studios were tight-lipped about the release, the news accompanied by a trailer came as a shock to fans.

As the teaser swept social media, viewers shared their anticipation and surprise including @DavidMPontes who remarked: “This Disney comeback will be beautiful.”

The announcement also came as a surprise as Disney previously shared plans to release a live-action remake of the first Moana film with Dwayne Johnson reprising his role as demigod Māui.

The logline for the upcoming release described Moana 2 as an “expansive new voyage with Moana, Maui and a brand-new crew of unlikely seafarers.”

It adds: ‘After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.”
