Charges of rape and assault against Greenwood were dropped in February, though United took the decision to conduct an internal investigation into whether the academy product can return to the squad.
Following the announcement that the Crown Prosecution Service had dropped the charges after key witnesses withdrew from the investigation, United announced: “Manchester United notes the decision of the Crown Prosecution Service that all charges against Mason Greenwood have been dropped. The club will now conduct its own process before determining next steps. We will not make any further comment until that process is complete.”
Despite that announcement coming over 12 weeks ago, a decision is said to be no closer. However, players from both the men’s and women’s squad – as well as their partners – are reportedly opposed to the idea of the 21-year-old returning to the team following his arrest in January 2022.
