The Red Devils believe £70m would be a fair price for Kane due to his contract situation. Lewis’ ultimatum could drive the price down and enable United to re-enter the race for the 29-year-old.

United have been preparing their opening offer for Hojlund. However, they could put that deal on hold until Kane’s future is resolved.

Erik ten Hag’s chances of signing Kane could be boosted by his desire to break Alan Shearer’s Premier League goalscoring record. He currently has 213 top-flight goals to his name, 47 behind Shearer’s tally of 260.

Kane scored 30 goals in an under-performing Tottenham side last season. He would likely need at least two more years in the Premier League to hunt Shearer down and a move to Germany would only lessen his chances of doing so in the future.
