But it’s likely to be a position Ten Hag looks at strengthening next summer when Varane will be 31 and Maguire is likely out the door if his role is as limited as last term.
Ahead of Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur, Ten Hag suggested that he was happy to exit the transfer window with his current squad.
“Our squad is covered – all the positions are covered. I think we have a good squad, and with this squad, we are convinced we can go for our [trophy] targets,” Ten Hag explained.
But he added that United are always looking for opportunities ‘to strike’, and Maguire’s departure would open the door for further business.
