Head coach Jorge Vilda, a controversial figure in Spanish women’s football, also gave a speech. The 42-year-old has overseen a team in which several players felt obliged to make themselves unavailable for international duty due to their treatment and poor facilities.

Vilda was seen celebrating by himself after the game while the players danced among each other. His presence on the stage was greeted by a smattering of jeers, although jubilant chanting largely drowned out the sound.

“Without your energy and your support this would not have been possible. We said we were going to put you on your feet,” Vilda said.
