When the weather is warm outside, there’s nothing better than cracking open a window and letting some fresh air into your home

And while this can provide some welcome relief from the heat, it can also have its drawbacks – as opening the windows is a sure-fire way to invite flies and other insects into your home.

Despite being fairly harmless, nobody wants a house full of flies. But bug infestations become more common when temperatures rise because they try to make their way inside to seek shelter from the heat.

Thankfully, experts from Garden Buildings Direct say there’s a very simple way to keep them at bay – meaning you can relax at home without any insects buzzing about.

A spokesperson said: “Unfortunately with the warmer summer weather comes an increase of pests like flies, wasps and mosquitoes.

“Aside from being a nuisance for everyone in the home, insects also harbour nasty bacteria which can transmit nasty diseases.”

“Luckily for homeowners, there are some thrifty hacks to keep bugs away from the home.”

How to keep flies out of your home

One of the most effective – but surprising – ways to banish flies is to make a simple contraption using some pennies and a bag of water.

All you need to do is hang a few coins in a clear plastic bag filled with water by your windows, as this acts as a deterrent to a range of flying pests.

Hang the bag near an entrance where the pests usually enter the home and insects like flies and wasps will avoid it. This is because it looks like a nest to them because of how the light reflects and refracts.

As well as this, some plants and herbs are natural fly repellents, and make a great and natural alternative to harsh fly sprays. Mosquitoes and flies are repelled by the scents and oils that some plants like lavender, basil and rosemary. And of course, a Venus flytrap will also kill the flies that land on it.
