The Salon Guy, a professional stylist and media personality with more than one million subscribers on YouTube, shared how often people should be washing their hair.

Many people wash their hair every day, while others opt for just once a week, but which is correct according to the expert? The Salon Guy dispelled some myths about hair washing.

There is plenty of advice on the internet about hair washing but this doesn’t account for the unique hair type of each individual.

According to The Salon Guy, how much – or how little – you wash your hair is totally up to you.

He said: “In my honest opinion, as a hairstylist for many, many years, wash your hair as needed. Now, what does that actually mean? What does your scalp need? What does your hair need?”

For those whose hair gets dirty very easily, perhaps at work or from playing sports, washing their hair “as often as possible” is the correct course of action.

He assured viewers: “It’s not going to make your hair fall out, it’s not going to do any damage to your hair – it’s not going to be the end of the world.”

It is possible to wash your hair too often though, according to the expert. This, coupled with using the wrong shampoo and hair products, can dry the scalp out.

Flakiness or dandruff may be a sign that you are overdoing it with the washing, essentially “stripping your scalp of the oils that it needs”.

The expert continued: “In my opinion, washing your hair two or three times a week – maybe Monday, Wednesday and Friday – is absolutely perfect.”

Washing your hair every two to three days is also optimal if you want longer locks. The Salon Guy claimed that this hair washing routine keeps the hair moisturised and can cause more rapid hair growth.

As for conditioning, The Salon Guy explained that this gets rid of any tangling and keeps it soft and smooth.

Those with thin or fine hair may find that too much conditioner weighs their hair down and they only need to do this every second time they use shampoo.

Instead, they might shampoo and then use The Salon Guy’s 25 – Leave In Hair Treatment Spray to “tame the ends, prevent frizz, flyaways”, for UV protection and to protect from the elements.
