Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher laid into Manchester United star Casemiro after the Brazilian endured a tough time against Wolves. Neville believed the experienced star was ‘torn to shreds’ and that United’s midfield was ‘non-existent’.
United staggered to a 1-0 win over the Midlands side thanks to Raphael Varane’s goal. Andre Onana was fortunate not to concede a penalty on his debut late on.
The Red Devils struggled for control in midfield and Sky Sports’ pundits believed that was largely down to Casemiro’s display. Neville suggested that Erik ten Hag may be forced to sign Fiorentina’s Sofyan Amrabat to partner the former Real Madrid man.
Speaking about Ten Hag’s midfield, the former United defender said: “One thing he’s not going to do is go back to the Fred-McTominay style of midfield because they can’t play the ball properly. He wants everybody on that pitch to be able to play the ball his way.
“What I will say is Amrabat could come in and play alongside Casemiro, perhaps give him some help. Look, he got absolutely torn to shreds tonight Casemiro, Manchester United’s midfield were non-existent, they got ripped apart by Wolves.”
Casemiro often left too much space in front of United’s back four. He was not helped by former Chelsea star Mount, who endured a below-par debut.
Speaking over a replay of one incident involving the United player, Carragher added: “Casemiro has been really exposed tonight. Really exposed, it was far too easy for Wolves to exploit the space behind.
“Watch what happens to him here – the player bumps him and he almost doesn’t have the strength to get back and start up again. As Manchester United, you’ve spent big on Mason Mount, Fernandes is your captain, Casemiro is outstanding at times but this was a major problem.
