will be hoping to rekindle his rivalry with pole-sitter over the course of today’s Canadian Grand Prix, with the 38-year-old set to start from third on the grid at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. He managed to qualify in fourth yesterday but Nico Hulkenberg’s three-place penalty means that the Mercedes ace has been promoted to third and will start just behind a front-row pairing of Verstappen and .

Mercedes have looked much quicker since introducing their new sidepod design at last month’s Spanish Grand Prix and will be hoping that Hamilton will be able to challenge the front-runners in Montreal this evening. However, the Brit will initially need to find a way past Alonso before he will be able to have a crack at Verstappen, who remains the overwhelming favourite to take the chequered flag.

Hamilton has already warned that he will be doing everything in his power to finish ahead of Alonso at the end of today’s 70-lap contest, telling Sky Sports F1: “It was difficult to gauge yesterday because because we did our long run at the beginning of the session when the track was a lot slower and the others did it later on so they were setting faster [times].

“So it’s difficult to extrapolate where we stand, but we’re ahead of the Ferraris. Max will be gone, most likely, but if I can hold onto Alonso and give him hell, that’s what I’ll do.”
