Elvis Presley famously had some strange eating habits.
Aside from banning fish from Graceland and his love of munching gobs and gobs of cheeseburgers, he would often go through phases of eating the same meal over and over again.
His ex-wife Priscilla Presley remembered a time when the star would eat meatloaf for dinner every day for six months.
Of course, nothing connects food to Elvis more prominently than the Elvis sandwich.
The peanut butter, banana (and sometimes even bacon) sandwich comes in many variations today, but his former girlfriend Linda Thompson has now revealed the true recipe.
Linda, who lived with Elvis at Graceland from 1972-6 would sometimes prepare meals for The King instead of his maids. Appearing at Elvis Week 2023 in Memphis, Tennessee this month, the 73-year-old shared just how The King liked his famous sandwich.
She told fans: “I’d like to take credit for it, but it’s really the Elvis Presley way of making a peanut butter and banana sandwich. You mash the bananas – it has to be a ripe banana – and blend peanut butter in the mashed bananas.
“Take two pieces of white bread preferably, Wonder bread, and put the mixture in the bread and then you melt a stick of butter. It’s a lot of butter! And you saturate both sides of the bread and fry it like a grilled cheese sandwich, but it’s peanut butter and banana. Honestly, I don’t think I ever saw him eat a full one. But he just wanted to have a few bites.”
Linda then went on to share a story of how Elvis once sent her back down to the kitchen to make a bigger meal for him.
Linda shared: “He would ask me, ‘Honey, would you go downstairs and make me some bacon and eggs?’” She’d ask which maid Elvis would like her to ask, but he’d reply: “No I want you to do it because it tastes better when you make it.”
So the former Miss Tennessee would head down to Graceland’s kitchen, cook and then bring back up three eggs and four slices of bacon for her famous boyfriend.
However, after she placed the tray on his bed, the star replied: “What is this? Honey, I’m rich. I used to be really poor and we didn’t have a lot of food to eat and this looks like when I was poor and didn’t have enough food to eat. I want you to go back down there and put at least six eggs together and a half a pound of bacon. I won’t eat it all, but I just want to see it in front of me, I just wanna know I can afford that.”
