Social media platforms are awash with the latest haircare trends to make your hair shinier, thicker and more lustrous.
From chia seed masks to rosemary oil, we will try anything to make our hair look healthy and glossy.
However, a hair expert has claimed that one of the most “crucial” ingredients for silky, glossy hair is actually something we consume every day – but perhaps some of us don’t consume enough of.
Dr Balwi, a hair transplant surgeon at Elithair has shared the “most important” habit to adopt for shiny hair – and it doesn’t involve taking supplements or changing your diet.
Dr Balwi told Express.co.uk: “The most important habit a person can adopt for glass hair is drinking lots of water and remaining hydrated.
“Water is essential for maintaining the hydration levels of both the hair and scalp, which are crucial for achieving glossy, glass-like hair. Eight glasses of water per day is recommended.”
Dr Balwi also said how often you wash your hair could have an impact on how shiny and healthy it is.
Using shampoo too often on your hair could cause the oil glands in your scalp to produce more sebum which will make your hair greasy.
Over-washing your hair can also cause it to look less shiny and more frizzy as it can dry it out.
Dr Balwi added: “Washing your hair too frequently can strip away natural oils and moisture, leading to dryness and dullness, while washing it too infrequently can result in buildup and a lack of shine.”
If you don’t wash your hair enough, you could end up with greasy roots and a buildup of flakes and sebum.
However, how often you wash your hair will depend on your hair type, how much oil your scalp produces, how you style your hair and your lifestyle.
“It’s a really fine balance that depends on your hair type and scalp condition,” Dr Balwi said.
“Every three days will train your hair to use its natural oils without leading to too much product build-up.”
