Vinegar is a go-to cleaning solution for many, but unfortunately, it is not always the best option when it comes to cleaning certain things in a home.

The strong acidic qualities of vinegar can sometimes cause more harm than good, so it is vital to know when to avoid it.

Vinegar can specifically pose significant risks to natural stone surfaces, including marble, limestone, and even sealed granite.

According to Eric Beckman, a professor of engineering at the University of Pittsburgh, vinegar can cause irreversible damage to natural stone countertops, leading to etching and dulling over time.

The acid in vinegar has the potential to slowly dissolve these porous materials, compromising their integrity and appearance.

Instead of vinegar, homeowners are advised to use mild detergent solutions for routine cleaning.

Simply wiping down countertops with a sponge or dish towel dipped in mild detergent can effectively remove dirt and grime without risking damage to the stone surface.

For stubborn spots and stains, experts suggest using only plastic scrub pads, as abrasive materials can scratch and damage the stone.

By exercising caution and employing gentle cleaning techniques, homeowners can effectively maintain the pristine appearance of their stone countertops while minimizing the risk of damage.
