Beauty expert shares ‘huge’ makeup mistake women make that ‘ages you’

Getting older inevitably means that our faces age and sag. While makeup can be used to make you appear younger, it can also age if it’s applied incorrectly.

With this in mind, Maria Dallagiovanna, a brow trainer working with Ripe Hair & Beauty, has shared the three eyebrow mistakes that could be ageing your face.

Maria sees dozens of clients a week who she claims add years to their appearance through poor hair removal techniques and makeup application errors.

Over-plucking

Maria said: “This is the number one issue I see with clients. Too many women over-pluck their brows into a thin tadpole shape which ages you terribly.

“It’s often a throwback to the 90s and 00s when thinner brows were fashionable, but the hair has never been able to grow back.

“If you have over-plucked and are struggling with regrowth, my advice is to seek a professional brow stylist for semi-permanent brows.

“In this treatment, fine strokes of pigment are placed just under the skin to create the look of real eyebrows in the most flattering shape for your face.

“A good semi-permanent technique will make you look much fresher and could take 10 years off you.”

Using the wrong pencil technique

People often use eyebrow pencils to fill in the gaps in eyebrows and to alter the shape of their brows.

However, Maria warned that drawing eyebrows on badly is a “huge mistake” she regularly sees in her salon.

She said she sees this mistake most often among older women who have thinning facial hair.

Luckily, Maria has shared exactly how to pencil in your eyebrows to enhance your natural features without making you look older.

She said: “When pencilling, the first step is to get the shade spot on. Too dark and it will look harsh and heavy, as well as throwing off the balance of your face shape.

“You should choose a shade that is close to your natural brow while also enhancing your skin tone and eye colour – a good cosmetics counter will be able to help with this.

“When it comes to makeup, softer is always better as you get older – use delicate strokes to fill your brows as this will help you appear fresher and more natural.

“Many people make the mistake of applying too much product, making brows bulky, or creating a ‘block’ effect which looks very severe on older faces.”

Emphasising sagging

Faces naturally sag downwards as we age which means when applying makeup, we need to give the illusion of a “lift”.

Eyebrows that are too long at the tail can age the face and emphasise sagging, making you appear sad.

Maria suggested shortening the shape of the eyebrows so that the “tail just meets the outer corner of the eye on a flat angle”, lifting the overall impression of the face.
