It means that Wimbledon will be her final Grand Slam as Kontaveit looks to bow out on a high. Her previous best performance at SW19 came back in 2017 when she reached the third round – a feat she repeated in 2018 and 2019.

“Tennis has given and taught me a lot, and I am very grateful for that,” she added. “It has been important to me to bring the Estonian flag to the tennis courts and to be able to play in front of my supporters and fans all over the world.

“I am ready for new challenges after my last effort as a professional tennis player – to enjoy the game and compete as hard as I can at Wimbledon.”

Wimbledon begins on July 3, with the main draw for the women’s singles set to be made on June 30.
