Hundreds of high street shops fell victim to closures last year, ranging from coffee chains like Costa to the health and beauty giant Boots.
Despite many continuing as usual into the new year, some retailers will bid farewell to more sites throughout 2024.
Fashion retailer Next has joined Trespass, Sports Direct, Boots and The Entertainer in shutting down shops this year.
Shoppers will see dozens of branches exit high streets across the UK throughout January, with one specific date seeing at least three branches close their doors for good.
It comes following changing shopping habits and the rise in everyday costs for companies to keep physical stores open.
Next
The fashion and homeware giant Next will welcome customers to its Hatfield branch for the final time this weekend.
A spokesperson previously told the Welwyn Hatfield Times: “We can confirm that the Hatfield store will cease trade on Saturday, January 13, 2024.”
It comes after the brand announced that it would close 11 stores before the end of 2023.
Trespass
The British outdoor brand has more than 230 locations across the UK but this won’t be the case by the end of the month.
Trespass will shut one of its stores on Sunday, January 28, in Blackburn, East Lancashire.
It comes following an announcement from the retailer last year that it would shut six stores across the UK. This included locations in Harrogate, Canterbury, Derby, Solihull, Workington and Chesterfield.
Boots
The pharmacy giant has shut several branches recently as part of plans to reduce its portfolio from 2,200 locations to 1,900.
Customers in Kent, Wigan, Lothian, Bryn and Lancashire will all lose local branches this month, with two expected to go this Saturday.
- Boots, Lothian, Scotland – (January 13)
- Boots, Bryn – (January 13)
- Cliftonville, Kent (January 20)
- Pemberton, Wigan (January 26)
The Boots pharmacy on Hough Lane, Layland, Lancashire will also close its doors this month, though no exact date has yet been given. In a notice to patients in the Leyland area of Lancashire, the Worden Medical Centre said: “Please be aware Boots is closing in January, you will need to find an alternative pharmacy to nominate for your prescriptions to be sent.”
The retailer confirmed that more stores will be axed in “early 2024”, though exact dates are yet to be released.
The Entertainer
The popular children’s toy store will close three locations in January. The Galleries shopping centre, Bristol, the High Street store, Cheltenham and Bishops Weald House, Horsham will all be shut down throughout the month, though exact dates are to be confirmed.
It comes as part of plans to adapt to a “change in shopping habits”.
Sports Direct
Customers will no longer be able to visit Sports Direct Swindon in Orbital Shopping Park as it has been earmarked for closure in early 2024.
