‘I keep warm without turning the heating on thanks to my simple tips’

A savvy mother has shared her advice on how to keep warm this winter without ever having to turn the heating on.

Many people are struggling with wanting to save money on their electricity bills while also wanting to keep their homes cosy now that the weather has gotten a lot colder.

Cass, a mum who enjoys sharing tips on her blog the Frugal Family, has shared a few of her “common-sense ideas” for anyone feeling nervous about “scary price rises” that may arrive next month.

She has shared that one of the easiest ways to keep a home warm and navigate the high cost of living is to keep the curtains open as much as possible during the day, as the sun will naturally heat up any room.

Cassie wrote: “Keep your curtains open to get in as much heat as you can but as soon as it starts to get dark then close them to keep out the cold as the temperature drops.”

She added: “If you can, make sure you’re curtains are lined (with a good thick fabric) to keep as much of the heat in and the cold out as possible.”

Make sure to also check your home for anywhere possible drafts may get it, such as under doors, under windows or even an attic hatch.

Cassie said: “Do something about any drafts that you find because where the cold is coming in, the heat is also escaping which means that you’re literally pouring money down the drain.

“Door stoppers, window sealant and even just some duck tape around the loft hatch can help massively.”

Moving upstairs to work or relax is also another easy way to keep warm as heat rises, so in theory the upstairs rooms of a home should keep warmer for longer.

Cassie explained: “You could move your desk upstairs if you currently work downstairs, have an early night or just chill on the bed with a good book.”

Doing half an hour of exercise on equipment or even following a workout video online at home is another simple yet effective way to keep warm.

Cassie said: “I’ll turn my music up and do half an hour on my exercise bike and more often than not I’ll start off wearing a jumper over a T-shirt and take it off after about five minutes as I get that warm.

“There are loads of exercises you can do but whatever you do, I guarantee you’ll be warm by the time you finish!”

Keeping cosy and layered up may seem “really obvious” according to Cassie, but is a great way to quickly warm up without resorting to turning on the heating.

Cassie explained: “I also dress in layers at this time of the year because the extra clothes not only keep me warm but the layers trap warmth in between them too.”

Popping on a jumper, wearing a pair of thick fluffy socks, having a blanket and then making yourself “a nice cuppa” will not only be comfortable but is the perfect way to keep yourself warm.

Cassie wrote: “My Mam used to tell me that if your head and your feet were warm then the rest of you would be too so I have some lovely thick socks to pop on to warm me up

“I draw the line at wearing a hat at home though so the heating would definitely go on if that was needed.”
